Facebook Gift Screwup

May 6th, 2007 · 4 Comments

The gift image on facebook today was a guy on a surfboard, and I decided to buy it for a friend of mine who I used to surf with about 10 years ago. It’s the FIRST time i’ve bought a gift icon on facebook.

It cost $1 which is around R7.

But the sms and email notification that was sent to me after I bought it showed I was charged R1.

So facebook is losing out BIG TIME - whether it is the fault of my credit card company, Visa, or facebook i’m not sure, but at the moment it seems that South African’s are paying R1 for giving gifts on facebook.

    Hey Eric
I can tell you from a recent experience using the cc in Barbados, that those notifcations (mine were from FNB) are often wrong when it comes to international transactions. Its unlikely they’ll be wrong on your bank statement…

Interesting, I better buy all my contacts gifts while it’s still a buck a go ;)

Ignore this if I’m missing something, but how is Facebook losing out charging R1 for an image, i.e. an asset that is essentially worthless? They’re making R1 doing absolutely nothing, off who knows how many ZAians…

they’re not losing out, but when you buy it, you think you’re paying a dollar as it says that each gift image costs $1

but the email and sms i received from the bank confirming the purchase indicated i had been charged R1, not $1

Rob above, says i’ll still be charged R7 or so, even though the bank has let me know i’ll be charged R1

so will have to wait for my bank statement or log into my online banking in a day or 2 to see whether i’ve been charged R1 or R7 plus change ($1)

if it is only R1 instead of R7, i can see a lot more people in South Africa giving a lot more gifts to each other
