Angel Investors in South Africa

September 3rd, 2007 · 22 Comments

Angel Investing

I’ve been speaking to a number of journalists in South Africa and abroad recently about the state of the angel investor market in South Africa.

The Sunday Times published some of my comments yesterday.

I look forward to the day when entrepreneurs have easier access in South Africa to the Angel network.

Hi - i am looking for an investor for my interior design business, which is based in Cape Town. I have a full business plan and CV for my business partner and I. We have an amazing product/ service, but are looking for that extra boost that would enable us to go that extra mile! Where do i begin??

  • 4 Eric // Dec 7, 2007 at 12:05 am

    Hi Pamela and Louise,

there are a number of ways of raising finance.

    1. Speak to the banks
    2. Friends and family round
    3. Angel Investors - approach high net worth individuals
    4. Corporate Investors
    5. Venture Capitalists

And in addition there are brokers, middle men and an assortment of other parties eager to get involved for a variety of reasons.

You also need to decide whether you are looking to give away equity or want to loan funds. The advantage of equity is the funding raised is most likely not a loan so there isn’t interest to be paid back - the disadvantage, you give up a share of your business.

The first step once you have got your business plan ready both down on paper, and in your mind, is to start approaching people - speak to as many of the people on the list that you can…it’s time consuming, but each person you speak to, you’ll learn a little more about how to sell your business to someone, and probably learn a few new ideas along the way for your business.

And eventually, assuming your business has all the right ingredients (potential, management team etc), after knocking on enough doors, you’ll find your right investment partner…

    GOOD LUCK

    Hi Eric,

I am young namibian, with a proposal to start a website that advertises jobs to our local market. I am less than a month away from launching my product and I am in need of funding to start my venture.

I have come up with new ideas to not only deliver the job vacancies through a website but through other innovative ideas to also cater for those with no internet access. this ideas require a substantial input of funding in order to bring them to life.

I have a BP in place and will more than like to discuss this opportunity with you. Who knows? we might use the solutions in this venture to launch a similar product in south africa.

I am currently testing out the website on the web address provided above. It’s being hosted by a friend in Austria.

    Angel Investors?? South Africa!

This sounds great…what ROI is expected from these investors.

Our company is the largest sandstone mining company in Southern Africa. We are in the process to establish Bulk Distributors in each major province in South Africa to supply our smaller distributors and dealers.
The cost of the infrastructure to setup a warehouse in Gauteng is estimated around R1.5 million.

We have 12% shareholding available for investors. We plan to list at alt-x in two years time.

Our current production capability is approx. 450 000 square meters per annum.

Let me know should there be an angel interested…

    Hello Angel/s

We have benen busy in rural South African with a Communit Based Tourism, Skills Development, Music Venue, Wsate Management and Environemntal Education Project with aRegion of Kwa Zulu Natal South Africa, We have been doing so without any remuneration or working budget for 3 years and bagan this project in 2004. We require a budget for the developmetn of an Eco-Tourism Tourism Faciltiy, and already have signed docs from govrnemnt for a 3 hectare poice of paradise overlooking a gorge where the views are absolutely breathtaking. This process took 1.5 years as in rural South Africa, there is Traditional Leadership to meet with, Local Government and Regional Agricultural Criteria that need to be met and legally dealt with to allocate land.

We require R10, 000, 000-00 to implement these solutions and have detaiked business plans, cost analysis and budgets to submit on enquiry to intersted investors. We would Love to secure funding this year as we have a set if action plans that must be implemented to facilitate a unique entertainments package for Wolrd Cup 2010 in 2010

Please assist our collective Angels in the Filed succesfully complete their Projects. Look forward to your thoughts and advise.

Kind Regards, Togetherness, Peace to you

    Hi there

I’ve created and run the very aptly named websites called, http://www.dateworld.co.za and http://www.careerworld.co.za in Southern Africa and I know that these are two very lucrative markets on the internet.

I already have a decent database on the Career World web site and I’m looking for investors that will share my views and invest in promoting these two websites.

The Date World web site is coming on and I’m hoping to reach the 1000 member mark sometime soon.

If you’re an investor, looking for a lucrative online venture.. With these two very uniquely named websites, I’m sure we can turn this market on it’s head.

Small and Big investors are welcome.

    Hi Eric,

I am puzzled and hope you can assist to enlighten me …
Our start-up company is raising capital and offer equity in return. When trying to arrange that investors’ money be paid into a trust account, our lawyers informed us that it is illegal for a non-publicly listed company (like ours) to sell equity beyond our personal network of friends and family. (I suppose it makes sense, because such a company can not be regulated like listed companies.)
Does this mean that we cannot target the industry in which we plan to launch our product, to become investment partners? There are not that many rich people and potential investors in my personal network!

    Regards, Anna
