Want to join an Internet Start-up

December 3rd, 2009 · 5 Comments

It was late 1998, and I was at a cross-roads in my life. I was working as a Financial Analyst for a large international corporate, and they offered me the opportunity of a lifetime - the chance to become a Chartered Accountant by doing my articles with them, and then to work for them for a couple years once I had qualified. It was a 5 year plan mapped out.

That night I went out with my cousin to the Nando’s in Gresswold (don’t know if that one still exists) and we spoke till 3 in the morning…

But not about my corporate opportunity.

Instead, we spoke about the new business he was planning on launching - a company which would build websites for people. A web development company! The internet intrigued me, I was inspired by the thought of building a company, and the next morning, as the sun was rising, I made my way to my corporate HQ and handed in my resignation.

My boss looked shell-shocked that I was leaving a high paid “cushy” job, for a low paid (actually no paid!) work through the night and weekend, no future guaranteed, survive on baked beans life! And even though that opportunity didn’t work out, and 6 months later I was on my way to London, that was the BEST decision of my life!

Adrian Gore summed it up on the CNBC Africa entrepreneurship discussion this evening. The life of an entrepreneur isn’t easy, but I wouldn’t have swapped it for any other path (he didn’t say exactly that, but that’s the message I got from him talking)

And now, for the umpteenth time since 1998, I’m doing it again! We’ve tested our concept over the last 2 years, and have now raised our angel investment to create our global vision. Will we be the next facebook or twitter? Entrepreneur Magazine thinks so (see my business partner on the cover in the December issue, and read about our plans inside), but until we build the company up, it’s just a vision.

And that’s why we need YOU! Are you looking for the opportunity of a lifetime? We want the brightest, smartest, motivated people to get in touch, and see whether you are the right people to go on this journey with us. We’re moving into our new office (with white floors and a panoramic view of THE MOUNTAIN!) in Cape Town tomorrow.

If your dream is to help build an Internet Startup from the ground up, into an international power-house, now’s your chance to get involved.

Let the games begin!

Great blog entry, if I was in Cape Town I would have loved to jump and give your venture all I’ve got. It’s my sole passion to not only start an IT networking company (with no investment so far) but to also leave the comfort zone of a work I’m in to start working on the dream. To be honest I’m really glad it all worked out for you as it gives me hope that I could look back in the future without regret.
