1. “Now guess how old I am? Twenty-seven. You know what that makes me here? A senior citizen. This firm is entirely comprised of people your age, not mine. Lucky for me, I am very good at my job or I’d be out of one. You guys are the new blood. You’re gonna go home with the kesef.” Ben Affleck in Boiler Room isn’t talking about the Internet but he could be. It’s a new world. Marc Zuckerberg who founded Facebook is 24 years old. Don’t worry about notes. I posted the summary on my blog last night.

2. What do I want you to go away with?
a. Take a look at what are the large social media sites that are hot at the moment.
b. Spark Ideas on how to monitor and get involved in the global discussion
c. Spark Ideas how to be proactive about promoting your brand or message through social media

Your strategy for getting involved with social media will differ for every company depending on your objectives…

3. Question - who personally has used social media sites? for social? for business? time versus effort - Too many different social media sites for me to keep up & I’m in the trenches. How does your company keep track.
a. Use the biggest ones.
b. Use alerts like google alerts to keep track of specific phrases. play around till the information you are getting is quality rather than quantity.

4. South Africans do use local sites, but the big traffic is on the international sites - linkedin, myspace, facebook, youtube, flickr, twitter
The dinner table topic is around Facebook at the moment - Arthur Goldstuck 3.85 million Internet Users by end of 2007 - Facebook around 200k growing by 2000 every day - 5% of the South African Internet population - let that be your starting point.

SLIDE 5: http://www.webmasterworld.com/

5. Webmasterworld - early forum still going strong - thousands of postings a day - google section - google put people into the sections both to reply and be proactive

SLIDE 6: http://www.youtube.com/

6. YouTube - what is it? local versions zoopy & myvideo. international more traffic if you get it right. local easier to get noticed and more targetted visitors.

SLIDE 7: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koRlFnBlDH0

7. YouTube - many examples of viral marketing - NIKE clips often get circulated but company’s are now producing video clips specifically for YouTube - “Film Lovers will love this” - 44 second clip taking the sex scenes from well known European movies - objective? Promoting European Films - 1 Month on YouTube - viewed 3.6 Million Times - Margot Wallström, European Commissioner for Institutional Relations and Communication Strategy, said: “It is very important for the commission to use all the means at its disposal when it comes to communicating with European citizens.” - amazing if you can get it right, but one of the hardest things in marketing in my opinion to get right

SLIDE 8: http://twitter.com/iol

8. Twitter - asks one question?. What am i doing at this moment? different ways to think about it. IOL.co.za lets people get latest headlines - probably not them, and they should be finding out who is using their brand. If it is them - why only 132 followers??? OR add it to your site like eSquared have done & let the staff express themselves / brings personality to the company. Grey method - built software to get most friends - went to top of friends list - HUGE TRAFFIC to website

SLIDE 9: http://www.esquaredfashion.co.za/

9. Should my company have a blog? what if people say negative things about the company? they’ll say them anyway, gives you a chance to know about their opinion and respond.

SLIDE 10: http://www.iweek.co.za/ViewStory.asp?StoryID=170064

10. Get involved - not just from a Corporate level? story of dell, laptop, R500 P&P PLUS Zero for R6k laptop - no email apologising. imagine if they had given us a free mouse? or a voucher off our next computer. wasn’t just 600 people - it was every person those 600 speak to & continue to speak to. Comment on blogs.

SLIDE 11: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ericedelstein/

SLIDE 16: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2230619052

16. search for Animated Meerkat from Vodacom

Go into one of the HATE groups - 16 000 people - did they have anything to do with the ad coming down? “Well it seems that Vodacom has somehow abandoned its Meerkat campaign (well at least for now anyway). I think it was largely to do with this group, which has generated headlines and sparked off disccussions accross the country. I wanna thank every single one of you for uniting against the meerkat and bringing down the vermin.” where was vodacom - did they react?

SLIDE 17: Image of My Groups

17. Should you set up your own group if you do your homework and no-one on facebook already loves you? pro’s & con’s. PRO - can message your members. CON - only up to 1000. can’t extract the data of your members. might be seen to be biased if the admin works for the company

SLIDE 18: http://www.facebook.com/apps/

18. apps in facebook - create one and let the power of viral take it away. Chess.com - everytime I play a game of Chess against someone I know i’m seeing their brand. Haven’t gone yet, but matter of time. And using twitter skype in Facebook.
